During the First World War transporting casualties to medical facilities became a huge issue and in order to deal with this, Ambulance Trains, provided by the Royal Army Medical Corps, were introduced. These were essentially hospitals on wheels, many coaches long, with wards, operating theatres and many of the other facilities of a hospital and provided immediate treatment to the wounded and transported them to base hospitals. Charles Babb died from unspecified causes on 10th February, 1915, while serving with the 12th Ambulance Train in France.
